The Human Angle of South Africa

South Africa has endured just about as much as any nation over the past 50 years. The world knows of Apartheid and Mandela serves as an icon for millions not just in Africa, but to the Western world as well. Despite the billions being spent to welcome the world for a month plus and to host Africa's all-time greatest party, there is still a nation of people living in horrible conditions. Townships still overrun the countryside and although political power has been given back to the majority, black African in South Africa, the money and infrastructure still lay with minority whites or the Western world abroad.
The end result? When the lights are turned off on the party mid-July this summer and the world is watching no more, students that want to read a book in a nearby high school will still have no book to read.

More than anything during his presidential years, Mandela inspired and taught a nation to pick itself up by its bootstraps and work toward a common future.
I'm lucky to be a graduate student at UConn and have eyes and ears on the ground in the form of UConn students that are part of an Honors study abroad program stationed out of Cape Town. These students are helping South Africans as interns at local schools. There is word of dire need for supplies in the classroom and for extracurricular activities. The book club after school at Thandokhulu High School needs help acquiring books for aspiring minds. If you want to help donate here is how..
